Remote Education Provision - Information for parents & carers

We hope that the information included within this document will support you help your child to access ‘remote’ learning whilst at home. It is designed to provide you with the relevant links and also an outline of what will be delivered as remote learning for our pupils during this period of Lockdown and during any subsequent school closures due to COVID.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to our pupils whilst at home?

We will endeavour to continue to teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, some of the activities which are offered for Forest School and PE are less practical and more theory based. Within English, areas being covered may be more literacy based rather than linked to a specific text.

Remote teaching and study time each day – key questions and answers: 

1. How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Key Stage 2 A maximum of three hours per day, this can include Life Skills work too.
Key Stage 3 & 4 A maximum of four hours per day, this can include Life Skills work too.

2. How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

The key site for accessing online education is  Web icon Google classroom

Google Classroom is our platform for delivering curriculum content, some of which is the same as that which is being delivered within school. Each subject will appear as a different class on your child’s screen; when they enter the class there will be work there from their teacher. Your child must make sure they ‘turn in’ their work once it is completed to allow the teacher access to it and provide feedback.

Google Classroom can also be used to interact with the teacher by sending messages about the work set and asking questions which will help your child to complete the task set. This will allow them to access learning from all of the subjects taught within school.

Web icon Mymaths 

 MyMaths is the online platform used to deliver maths work for all year groups. A link to Mymaths is provided on Google classroom. The work is set by the class teacher and is relevant to the current area of study. Mymaths is monitored by the teacher and the head of department, so we have an overview of everything which is being completed. As soon as the work is completed, feedback is provided and further tasks are set.

Kerboodle has resources for English, Science and Topic. If a teacher wishes a pupil to access Kerboodle specifically, instructions will be provided on Google classroom.


3. If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • Pupil laptops are being issued as they are set up by our IT provider and sent out to pupils. As of the week commencing the 25th of Jan 2021 we have sufficient resources to ensure ALL our children can have access to a device in their home – if you have not got a working device, access to the internet or have issues with data please contact the office immediately.
  • Printed materials will be provided to all pupils; this will allow them the choice of completing work online or on paper. We do this as many parents/carers express the need to have ‘physical’ resources available to engage their child in learning.
  • Paper copies of work can be returned to school in the SAE (stamped addressed envelopes) sent out with learning resources. We will continue to provide this service to ensure that parents/carers are not incurring any costs.

4. How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • Lessons set on Google classroom (online learning); teachers will set and provide feedback for any work which is completed on Google classroom.
  • Teachers may suggest lessons placed online by other providers, for example Web icon Oak Academy 
  • Printed paper packs produced by teachers
  • Pupils can spend time reading books which they have at home.
  • Web icon BBC bitesize – this covers most subjects across the KS2 – KS4 curriculum
  • Web icon Mymaths – this enables direct and personalised interaction between the pupil and the class teacher
  • Other websites which teacher’s direct pupils towards
  • Developing Life Skills


Engagement and feedback

1. What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We ask that pupils are engaged with learning experiences for 3-4 hours per day; this can include academic studies using the work pack or Google classroom alongside Life Skills development too.
    We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to complete the work which is set.
  • It is important that whilst working from home pupils remember to have short breaks and change activities regularly. Incorporating ‘brain breaks’ and ‘movement breaks’ into the plan for the day is a good way for your child to see how the day will be broken up.
  • Another key thing will be encouraging your child to talk through their work with you: sometimes things are a lot clearer when they have been discussed. This may also highlight any problems which can be raised with your child’s tutor or directly with the class teacher via Google classroom.

2. How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

  • Teachers will be looking at Google classroom daily, to see what has been completed, provide feedback and provide more work when needed.
  • Tutors will, as part of their contact, be asking about work completed from the paper resources. We have provided SAE (self-addressed envelopes) for the work to be returned to us. This will enable us to feedback on the work that has been completed at home too.
  • Tutors will continue to call or email regularly to check how everything is going, what work has been completed and help deal with any worries or concerns. If it is subject related, they will be able to ensure that the question gets to the right member of staff. The expectation is that you engage with the tutor, so we can ensure that your child is being supported.

3. How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:

  • Feedback will be provided, for work submitted, at least weekly by the teachers. The feedback will consist of commentary about what the pupil has done well and areas for improvement.
  • The lead for Teaching and Learning scrutinises the weekly contact sheets submitted by staff and monitors all aspects of communication including the quality of feedback
  • Some work which is set on Google classroom will be self-marking, such as quizzes.


Additional support for pupils with particular needs

1. How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • All our children have an EHCP and all have specific and individual needs. Teachers will continue to plan and deliver personalised learning.
  • Work set will be differentiated, where necessary, to allow pupils to access the curriculum which will be offered.
  • There will be specific work set for some pupils, to support their literacy and allow them to access the content.


Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

  • Pupils who are required to self-isolate will have their work set on Google classroom; these activities will link to what their cohort are being taught in school at that time.
