Our Ethos and aims
Our ethos is focussed on meeting the needs of individuals, with our core purpose being centred on providing the highest quality of education.
Emphasis is placed on delivering high quality, adapted lessons, within a culture of respect, honesty and encouragement. It is our intention that the pupils in our school will benefit from the positive relationships we establish and that they will fully engage, achieve and thrive in our care.
At Downland, pupils learn within a broad and balanced curriculum and can ultimately achieve a range of GCSE qualifications and necessary life skills. Our curriculum pathways are designed to challenge and develop pupils’ skill sets and are created in response to their SEND profile and aspirations.
Core priorities for our staff are to consistently meet the social, emotional and educational goals of each pupil. We aim to prepare and equip our young people with the appropriate skills that are essential for becoming a successful and resilient citizen within today’s ever-changing society.
As part of our curriculum, we teach Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE), provide careers advice / guidance and enhance personal well being through focussed tutoring. The school emphasises the importance of reward and celebration of achievement and this is strongly embedded within our culture.
